IMPROVING YOUR VEHICLE’S FUEL ECONOMY – PART 2
IMPROVING YOUR VEHICLE’S FUEL ECONOMY – PART 2
By improving your vehicle’s fuel economy, you will lessen your pain at the pump. In Part 2 of our series on improving your vehicle’s fuel economy we will look at things that you can do while driving to get better gas mileage.
- Remove roof racks when you aren’t using them. Although they might make your vehicle look cool, removing them will reduce wind resistance, which will boost your fuel economy.
- Keep the windows closed and use your vents for air when the weather is mild. Decreasing drag will help you get better gas mileage.
- Accelerate slowly and don’t rev your engine. The fact is, aggressive driving wastes gas. Driving smoothly will not only improve your fuel economy, but it will also prolong the life of your tires and brakes.
- Slow down. When you speed, your vehicle wastes a lot of fuel. Fuel economy decreases rapidly at speeds over 50 miles per hour.
- When driving on the highway, use cruise control. By maintaining a constant speed, your vehicle won’t use extra fuel while it’s accelerating. Plus using cruise control will keep you from driving at faster speeds, which is less fuel-efficient.
A few simple alterations in your driving habits can go a long way toward improving your vehicle’s fuel economy. As we discussed in the last post, proper maintenance can also help.
