In an effort to raise money for breast cancer research, European Auto Tech participated in the Brakes for Breasts campaign during the month of October 2013, along with 43 other auto repair shops located around the United States. Participating repair shops offered free brake pads to customers during that time. Customers were only charged for the labor and any additional parts. Each shop then donated 10% of the cost of each of those brake jobs to the Cleveland Breast Cancer Vaccine Research Fund. The program was able to generate over $60,000 for breast cancer research.

We are discovering that as new cars are coming off of their factory warranty and reaching the independent garages, they have been fairly neglected in the basic service areas. By basic service area we mean tire rotations, brake fluid changes and especially standard engine oil and filter changes. In an effort to look green and appear to produce an overall lower maintenance automobile, auto manufacturers are claiming their cars only need oil and filter changes every 10k miles, 15k miles, and even in some cases, 20k miles.

Most auto manufacturers are now offering maintenance plans that appear to cover the costs of full maintenance but in all actuality do not. These skeleton maintenance plans only cover oil changes within their extended mileage guidelines. Extended mileage intervals are causing internal engine problems because engines are not receiving the critical oil and filter changes as often as needed. Many components inside the modern automobile engine are controlled by oil flow and oil pressure, therefore clean and high quality engine oil is of the greatest importance. Contaminates from the combustion process, such as blow by, enter the oil and remain suspended there. As these contaminates build up in the oil over time they can clog the small oil passages within the engine such as lifters and cam adjusters thus leading to mechanical problems much sooner that normally expected.

Many consumers do not know that this supposedly “complimentary” maintenance plan is included in the purchase price of the automobile without choice to the end user. If an automobile you purchase includes this “Free Maintenance” plan, it is best to have supplemental oil changes performed in between those covered by the free maintenance offered by the agency. We generally recommended engine oil and filter changes every 5k~ miles. This seemingly conservative approach will provide a longer service life to engine mechanical components over the many years of vehicle ownership.

PORSCHE IMS INTERMEDIATE SHAFT BEARING FAILURE

PORSCHE IMS INTERMEDIATE SHAFT BEARING FAILURE

The Porsche 911 and Porsche Boxster from model year 1997 to 2005 have a high failure rate of the intermediate shaft bearing also known as an IMS bearing. Its design and construction lead to premature failure of the bearing, which results in catastrophic engine failure. The intermediate shaft’s basic function is to drive the four camshafts via timing chains. The bearing that typically fails is at the flywheel end of the crankshaft. Both the double row and single row IMS bearings in the M96 engine are prone to this type of failure. For a more detailed explanation of why the bearing fails please read this page at LN Engineering.

We here at European Auto Tech always check for metal and plastic particles in the oil filters at oil changes. If particles are present there is a good chance the IMS bearings are failing. Plastic in the oil filter is an indication the bearing sealing rings are degrading and metal in the filter indicates the bearing itself is failing.

Bearing failure is almost inevitable, but there are ways in extending the life of the IMS bearing. Proper oil temperature should always

be maintained, this is easily accomplished by keeping your cooling system in good working order and changing the engine oil frequently which means more often than the factory recommendation. Keep in mind though that the original IMS bearing is a permanently “sealed” bearing, so in theory no engine oil can make it into the bearing itself, unless of course the seals are compromised.

Because of the high failure rate of the IMS bearing, European Auto Tech suggests IMS bearing replacement when plastic or metal particles are found in the oil filter, a rear main engine seal is replaced, when replacing the clutch, or as a preventive repair before actual failure and engine damage occurs.

The IMS bearing can be replaced with the engine in the car, except for TipTronic 911’s, by using the LN Engineering retrofit kit. The LN Engineering IMS bearing retrofit kit uses “ceramic hybrid bearings” and Timken’s “sintered nitride ultra low friction roller balls” to improve wear and corrosion resistance. Other improvements to enhance durability include, a larger diameter center bearing shaft with a relocated o-ring and stronger chromoly flange hub.

The retrofit requires the transmission to be removed, on TipTronic 911’s it will require removal of the engine and transmission, as previously stated. After removal of the flywheel, setting the engine on top dead center, removing timing chain tensioners, locking camshafts, we then use the puller designed by LN Engineering to remove the old IMS bearing and install the new LN Engineering IMS retrofit bearing. This is an involved job, and should only be performed by professional technicians experienced with Porsche engine repair.

As an alternative to IMS bearing replacement, European Auto Tech suggests installing the IMS Guardian from LN Engineering. The IMS Guardian™ system relies on “Magnetic Chip Detection” technology which has been used in aircraft since the early 1970’s and even dating back to the 1950’s for monitoring the metal content in engine oil.

The sensor consists of two strong, opposing-pole, permanent magnets with an insulated gap of air in between. Each magnet is connected, by a wire, to the wiring harness, comprising an open electrical circuit. The wired magnet unit itself is mounted in a modified oil drain plug replacing the stock drain plug, that goes into the crankcase sump plate. As oil circulates throughout the engine, the magnets will attract the smallest metal debris. This debris is caused by deterioration within the engine and the IMS bearing and is circulated within the engine oil. As the ferrous metal debris is captured in the center of the magnets, it will quickly build up to the point that it will bridge the gap in between the magnets allowing the conduction of electricity, and completion of the electrical circuit. Closure of the electrical circuit causes a warning light, installed on a switch blank in your center console, to illuminate and an audible alert will buzz.

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, European Auto Tech will be joining 104 other independently-owned auto repair shops around the country by participating in the Brakes for Breasts campaign during the month of October.

Customers receive free brake pads, paying only for labor, and 10% of every brake service is donated directly to The Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Research Fund . This fund supports research for a vaccine that will cure breast cancer, rather than merely treat it. One of the Clinic’s physicians, Dr. Vincent Tuohy, has actually developed a vaccine that has proven effective in preventing the development of breast cancer. The results thus far are very promising, however more research is needed.

The stakes are extremely high. Each year over two hundred thousand new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in the United States, and experts estimate that about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer at some point during her life. Nearly 40,000 women die from breast cancer in the U.S. each year.

The members of the Brakes for Breasts campaign are working toward the day when no woman is diagnosed and no family has to lose a loved one to this disease. Now in its fourth year, this fundraising campaign continues to grow. In 2013, the campaign raised over $66,000 nationwide and this year organizers hope to reach their goal of $110,000.

Unlike with some other breast cancer fundraising campaigns, 100% of the proceeds raised by Brakes for Breasts go directly to the Clinic for research, with none used for administrative fees or marketing expenses.

TIMING BELTS – MAKE PROPER TIMING BELT MAINTENANCE A PRIORITY

Interference Engines, The Sleeping Time Bomb in Today’s New Cars.

These engines use a rubber timing belt to synchronize the internal engine components. Today’s modern Hi Tech VW and Audi engines use Multi-valve technology to squeeze the most power out of these small engines.

As designed, they push the limits by opening the valves farther and keeping them open longer, while the pistons come dangerously close to the valves as the engine rotates.

When everything is synchronized perfectly, your engine runs strong with quick throttle response.With these close tolerances everything MUST run in synchronization. The problem is if this rubber timing belt breaks, these close tolerances are your worst enemies. The result will be catastrophic internal damage to your engine. Like a Ticking Time Bomb. The resulting repair costs could be in the $5,000 to $7,000 range.

The balance is to get the longest life out of your timing belt, but have it replaced before it ruins your engine.

The manufactures push for longer interval on services and suggested repair intervals. This makes their cars look more economical and longer lasting, but to the car’s owner, this is pushing your car to its limits, often exceeding common sense.

Timing Belt Teeth Sheered OffThe manufacturer recommends an oil change every year or 12,000 miles sounds high, doesn’t it?

The same extended replacement interval is recommended with your timing belt. The factory repair manual recommends replacement as high as 105,000 miles. This is past their WARRANTY PERIOD and out of their responsibility.

We know form experience that these belts can break as low as 70,000 miles. This is especially true in our hot climate here in Tucson. They also know this from multiple class action lawsuits, that they often never make it to the recommended replacement interval.The manufactures have so many different recommendations on this replacement. As we can see year to year, model to model, automatic to manual transmission and gas to diesel they are all different.

The long and short of it is, if your timing belt brakes you’re in for an OUTRAGEOUS repair bill.

Here at European Auto Tech we set a conservative standard at 60,000 mile interval for the VW and Audi vehicles. We feel this is a safe mileage interval for rubber timing belts out here in the southwest desert, without chancing the inevitable.

COOLING SYSTEM – COMMON PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH POOR COOLING SYSTEM UPKEEP

The cooling system is a critical part of the engine but is mostly over looked for servicing until a component breaks or leaves you stranded.

Antifreeze/coolant breaks down over time and needs to be replaced. The results of not servicing the system can be disastrous, especially here in the desert.

The antifreeze/coolant must handle temperatures around 250 degrees without boiling (water boils at 212 degrees) and protect from freezing to below 50 degrees. A lot is expected from this liquid.

Antifreeze/coolant is made up of basically ethylene glycol and water. Which last a long time. BUT it is the additives in the antifreeze/coolant that break down and is the reason for servicing the system on a regular basis. The additive package is a mixture of corrosion inhibitors and extenders. When the additive packages break down, that’s when trouble starts.

There are many more components in the cooling system that need to be inspected also. Hose, fan, radiator, cap just to name a few. Any one that if they fail can cause you to have a bad day.

The cooling system should be serviced according to the manufactures time lines, and it’s components inspected at every service.

The following is a case in which a customer’s car cooling fan failed, on a hot day and the person thought they could make it home.

In picture 1 you see the coolant expansion tank with a large crack; this is from the cooling system getting very hot and the pressures increasing to the point of causing this crack and all the coolant escaping from the system. Without the coolant in the engine, it started to overheat extremely fast.

In picture 2 you see a plastic pipe running alongside the engine block, the block got so hot that it started to melt the plastic pieces connected to it.

This engine was destroyed, it could have been saved if the car was shut off at the first sign of trouble, but all this damaged happened in 5 minutes. So much for thinking it could make it home.

But if you look at picture 3, this car had another problem going on. That white goo is the silicate in the coolant. That is called silicate dropout, it happens when the antifreeze/coolant has been used beyond it life expectancy and the additives break down. This goo would have ended up plugging the system, plus the silicate is part of the corrosion inhibitor package. If the fan didn’t fail on this car, the lack of maintenance on the cooling system was going to cause a major problem in the near future.

Needless to say this car got and engine and ALL the cooling system components, metal rubber and plastic.

Bottom line: maintaining the cooling system is a lot cheaper in the long run than it is replacing engines.

SLUDGE – THE REPERCUSSIONS OF FAILING TO PROMPTLY CHANGE YOUR OIL AT REGULAR INTERVALS

Engine sludge is a thick, dark substance that can build up and clog the oil passages within an engine.

Normal engine combustion creates gases, water vapor, fuel fragments and acids inside the engine. These by-products of combustion are held in suspension in the motor oil. If the oil is changed at regular intervals, most of the sludge particles are drained away with the used oil. However, if the oil is not changed regularly, over time these by-products begin to group together to form sludge.

The main cause of sludge is from extending drain intervals beyond the car manufacturer’s recommendation. But we have seen sludge in customers’ cars that follow the oil change/service indicator on the dashboard or the manufactures recommendation in the maintenance manual. On average, the service indicator will count down from 7,500 miles to 15,000 miles between oil changes. And vehicles without service indicators the drain intervals are from 7,500 to 10,000 miles. But these recommendations are only under normal driving conditions.

Problem is normal driving conditions do not exist in the real world.

Most drivers drive under severe driving conditions definitions, under which more contaminants are produced. If you drive in hot or cold weather, in dusty or muddy conditions, on rough roads, in lots of stop and go traffic, make frequent short trips, and/or drive in coastal areas or where road salts are used, you are a severe driver.

Sludge can happen to any vehicle, regardless of the car’s age or mileage.

In fact, back in 1998 when a certain manufacture introduced their FSS (flexible service system) which was suppose to tell the difference between normal and severe driving conditions, they were experiencing a high engine failure rate. So bad that the issued a bulletin to the owners of those vehicles (I think the bulletin came out 2001 or 2002). The bulletin stated if the driver was going to go by the FSS recommendations in their instrument cluster, that they should switch to synthetic oil.

Sludge build-up within your engine can cause a decrease in engine performance and reduced fuel efficiency. Sludge can clog and restrict primary oil flow passages, oil return passages, and filter elements leading to reduced engine lubrication. It will reduce the cooling ability of the oil causing an increased strain on the cooling system. It will increase engine noise.

Once sludge builds up in an engine, it is difficult, if not impossible, to remove. In extreme cases over time, sludge build-up could cause engine failure, which can cost a consumer thousands of dollars in repairs.

The pictures show a severely sludged engine, this engine is beyond help. It needed major engine repair at a high repair cost.

There is hope if an engine has sludge. Minimal amounts of sludge we can clean up, we would have to evaluate it on a case by case basis.

But we recommend not allowing sludge to form. Lowering your oil change interval and depending on the year and make, changing over to synthetic oil is a start.

UPDATE: The image on the right is of the same engine after we performed a BG Engine Oil Quick Clean, lowered the customers oil change intervals for a short period of time and now they are changing their oil every 5000 miles. Some engines can be saved.

All new headlamps are made from durable polycarbonate plastic. They are nearly unbreakable, but have one draw back. They have to have a UV coating to keep them from discoloring. Here in the harsh Arizona sun, this can start degrading in as little as 3 to 4 years

New plastic headlight lenses have a factory applied UV coating to protect the plastic from degradation. Over time, harsh UV rays and road debris penetrate the factory UV coating resulting in hazing and yellowing. This hazing is not only unsightly, it is a serious safety concern, in fact hazed lenses reduce down-road illumination by 65% and increases oncoming driver glare by scattering light upward.

Unlike polishing or other lens restoration products designed just to remove the haze and yellowing, we here at European Auto tech restore the lens to like-new clarity and protection using a Professional Quality UV Block Clear Coat that has to be sprayed on using a professional spray gun.

Fuel Injection Service Explained

Over time deposits form on intake valves, in the combustion chambers, and in the fuel injectors. This causes loss of power, rough running, misfiring, pinging, hard starting. All resulting in poor gas mileage.

On 1996 and newer cars it will cause all the above but the engines control unit will ‘adapt’ for these conditions, it will add more fuel to the engines mixture, reduce the engines ignition timing and increase the engines idle. You might not feel like the engines running any different because of the control units intervention but the final result is the same, poor fuel economy.

The largest cause of these deposits is the quality of gasoline available. It is from the additives in the fuel which cause the deposits. In fact it is such a problem that some car manufactures have released TSB”S (technical service bulletins) addressing this problem

We perform fuel injection service which includes using BG products. First we will scan your cars engine computer, check and note the fuel adaptations. Then we will fog your intake system with BG Fuel Injection System Cleaner which will pre-soak and loosen the deposits, add BG44K to the fuel tank which will continue the job of removing the deposits and at the same time clean any deposits in the fuel injectors.

We will test drive your car to clear out the loosened deposits and than rescan the cars engine computer, clear any codes that were generated during the cleaning procedure and re-check and note the difference in the adaptions.In extreme cases we will also use (at an additional cost) BG Induction System Cleaner directly through the fuel injection system to clean heavily deposited engines.

The result after cleaning will be restored power, reduced emissions, faster starts, better engine idling and reduced fuel mileage.
